I have to question if I have misunderstood what I am seeing as the UK election approaches. I gather information to help me decide who to vote for and keep encountering just three sides: Labour, Conservative ...or none.
Is this because of habitual, influenced views on UK politics for some and complete repulsion at the whole damned system for others ...or are voters’ views truly informed about this current set of choices?
I have lived as an expatriate for most of my life; watching as other governments, did other things, that never concerned me. I feel like I look at this picture of UK politics, as a national ...but from a distance.
I have not been immersed in the British form of political culture for long enough, to feel any allegiance, to any party. Others have firm opinions that often seem based on where they were brought up, family/peer leanings or even the media most comonly read.
I just see what is ...right now.
I see corruption and ineptitude in my government and I see this mirrored in the Conservatives. I hear manipulation and spin in the words of both Labour and Conservative messages and I just don’t like what they are saying anymore than I like the way they are saying it.
This is not to say that I think the Lib Dems are just-right for the job; they have policies that don’t meet all that I want, but they are really close to sounding honest and unquantifiably [real].
Watching Prime Minister’s Question Time or any other occassion where our inglorious politicians bait and berate each other across the floor – the Lib Dems seem to bring the conversation back to relevant and important matters ...and this is important to me.
I realise I write this from a point of uninformed observer... but if the Lib Dems present a different option to the two clearly flawed main parties, then why is there such aversion to voting for them? And why can’t enough of us voting for them, mean they take power?
As the only major party to stand against the war and appear to have some wisdom about finance, I would have thought they would be an obvious choice for many of us.
